Treating Low Back Pain With Anti Infalmmatory Medicaiton

Low back pain affects most Americans to some extent in their life time.  Over 50 percent of Americans have experienced back injuries that are disabling and prevent them from going to work. Approximately 30 percent of patients suffering severe low back pain will get some form of surgery.  Out of all of the surgical treatment for back pain, over half the patients do not feel a relief in their symptoms after the procedure.  The common medical approach to treating aches and pains is the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDS as they are commonly known.  NSAIDS basically suppress the patient’s nervous system so that it is unable to do what it is supposed to do; create inflammation and healing.  Inflammation is the body’s correct response to injury and begins the process of healing and repair.  Unfortunately the process of healing can be uncomfortable and painful; some might call it a healing crisis.  Research has shown that more than 75 million NSAID prescriptions are given out each year in the United States, and more than 40 billion over-the-counter NSAIDs are sold every year.  We are bombarded with television commercials of why we need Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Celebrex, and many more anti inflammatories.  The pharmaceutical companies make it seem like it is impossible to get through the day without having a drug to control the pain and agony.  How many commercials do we see that show a guy is clutching his back in severe pain, then he takes a pill and hours later he is out on the golf course with a big smile on his face?

These numbers should cause us concern as anti inflammatory use is believed to cause thousands of hospitalizations per year and even deaths. The annual cost to treat the complications from taking anti inflammatories exceeds one billion dollars a year. Here are some interesting facts about taking these medications:

  • Over five percent of the US adult population routinely takes NSAIDs for pain and stiffness daily.
  • Over 15 percent of the elderly US population frequently takes NSAIDs for pain and stiffness.
  • Anti inflammatories have been shown to lead to stomach lining problems, digestive and immune issues.  Believe it or not, the gut lining is exposed to hundreds of bugs every day, and when it is not healthy it is unable to fend off these immune challenges.  The facts are that approximately 10 percent of more of patients consuming anti inflammatories long term will develop and ulcer.

There are many natural alternatives to treating low back pain without the use of these anti inflammatory toxic drugs.  These natural treatments and remedies help to enhance the body’s ability to break the inflammatory process and return the body to its natural healing capabilities.  Chiropractic care has been shown to be one of the most effective treatments for low back pain; and there are no drugs or toxic side effects to this natural therapy.  Massage therapy and acupuncture are also worth looking at as methods to alleviate pain and stiffness; they also approach therapy with an all natural philosophy

There has been diets specifically developed to alleviate chronic inflammation in the body, this will give the body a fighting chance because many times food can be one of the major underlying causes of inflammation in the body.  Some of the more natural, holistic supplements used in treating low back pain and inflammation are:

  • Turmeric
  • Boswellia
  • Bromelain
  • White willow bark
  • Green tea
  • Ginger
  • St. Johns Wort
  • Gotu Kola
  • Inositol
  • Fish Oil
  • Calcium Lactate

Before jumping in to the mainstream medical model for all of your aches and pains think about what these drugs actually do and is the risk of the potential side effects worth it.  When taking natural whole food supplements or herbs, they are easily absorbed and processed by the body but one should still be careful and consult a health care provider before embarking on a protocol.  Some of the homeopathic herbal formulas are very strong and may react with some prescription medications so always do your homework just to be safe.
