Do I Have To Get My Neck Cracked?

A common question asked by new patients is “Dr. Hamel do I really need to get my neck cracked”. They might go on to say, “it just looks scary and I’m not sure if I could relax enrough”. Chiropractic is simple and that is the beauty of the treatment. Dr. Tyler Hamel has been a chiropractor in the Kingwood Texas area for over 17 years and he has adjusted or re-aligned thousands of patients over that time period.

Dr. Hamel says there are some important facts about the spine, postural stress, inflammation and pain that his patient’s need to know. Education is key says Dr. Hamel, without it you can’t really expect a patient to understand why they are getting chiropractic care what is the intended goal. So the important facts to know are:

1. Postural stress causes compression on the spinal joints of the neck, mid-back and low back. Unfortunately everyone has postural stress and if you don’t I would like to meet you because I didn’t think it was possible, lol.

2. Compression on joints causes wear and tear or joint stress. This in turn causes irritation of the nerves that come out of the spine at the neck, mid-back and low back. Irritation of a nerve can cause severe pain, inflammation and problems with movement of the spine itself. All of this is no good and the longer that it lasts usually the more severe the symptoms like neck pain, headaches, back pain and sciatica.

3. In order to get better, alleviate pain, improve nerve flow and improve spinal function the spine needs to be decompressed, re-aligned, or put back in place. Chiropractic doctors do this using a specific chiropractic spinal adjustment.

4. What’s that cracking sound? The popping sound from an adjustment is the pressure being released from the joint itself; this is the intended results of the adjustment. It is actually gas bubbles that are released that are inside of the joint capsule that makes that cracking sound. Decompressing the spine with a chiropractic adjusment or neck cracks helps take pressure off the nerve which will alleviate pain, inflammation and restore proper function. This is why often times after a spinal manipulation or pop the kink in the neck disappears or the stitch in the back goes away. The process described above with a notable crack or pop is heard by using manual chiropractic adjusting.

Luckily Dr. Hamel also uses instrument adjusting for patients that are not interested in manual adjusting at all. Instrument adjusting uses a vibrational tool that helps re-align the spine, and the patient can move their neck or back at the same time as getting that specific spinal adjustment.

So the answer to the question is no you don’t have to get your neck “cracked” if you don’t like it, but you really need to get your spine adjusted so that your spine and nerves are functioning properly. Remember often times with chronic migraines, neck pain, low back pain and sciatica there is spinal stress, compression, nerve irritation and inflammation; this just won’t go away on it’s own. Medicine can always help your aches and pains feel better but in no way can they re-align your spine and take pressure off a compressed nerve.

Dr. Hamel has performed thousands of manual chiropractic neck pops, cracks, re-alignments, manipulations or adjustments to his patients in the Kingwood and Spring Texas communities. One might wonder are chiropractic neck adjustments safe? This is a natural process, a natural treatment says Dr. Hamel, there is no reason that it wouldn’t be safe. His youngest patient that he performed a chiropractic neck adjustment, “crack”, on was 8 weeks old and his most senior patient a very well rounded patient with an amazing history of 99 years.

If you have neck pain and you are worried about getting your neck adjusted or cracked please don’t; you can still get all of the benefits of chiropractic care whether you decide to receive instrument adjusting or manual adjusting. Remember the main reason for the chiropractic adjustment is to remove stress or compression from the spine which helps alleviate pain, muscle spasm and inflammation. If this compression is not removed the likelyhood of chronic neck pain continuing is very high.
